Native Instruments (NI) is one of the most respected software instrument making companies in the world. Diehard producers, remixers and sound designers for film, music and video games pull their tricks from the NI toolbox.

From basic software instruments that emulate classic modular synths and virtual deejay modules, to effects processors like Spectral Delay and Vokator, to virtual samplers like Kontakt, Kompakt, to its award-winning instrument-building and modular sound studio, Reaktor, NI apps are well designed and powerful, and kick out insanely great sound, noise, filters and tweakability.

Crazy About Absynth And NI
“I find new ways to treat things, ways to evoke emotions out of certain things exciting from a sound design point of view,” says Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, who used NI apps extensively for his latest record, “With Teeth.” “At the top of my list would be pretty much everything Native Instruments makes. From Reaktor to Vokator and Battery for drums. I’ve messed around with Kontakt a bit and Absynth is great.”

BATTERY
(sampler/drum module)

Battery In Action
In 2001, sound designer/composer/remixer and architect of aural mayhem Richard Devine flew out to L.A. to score two Nike commercials on set, using just a PowerBook and some headphones. “I had to fly out to Universal Studios. I did the whole thing in Logic Audio with another software sampler, Native Instrument’s Battery — it was completely done on that. It was just crazy,” he recalls.

“I love the Native Instruments stuff, a lot. Like Battery, Spectral Delay, the B4 — the whole set,” says Grammy-winning composer, programmer, engineer, remixer and producer for Tweaker, music, film, TV and games, and former drummer for NIN, Chris Vrenna.

FM7 At Work
When pro skateboarder/hiphop producer Chad Muska produced MuskaBeatz with hiphop greats Bambaataa, Raekwon, U-God, Melle Mel, Guru, KRS-One, Jeru, Prodigy, McLyte, Special Ed, Ice-T and Flavor Flav, he ran a bunch of virtual synths, samplers and effects, including Absynth, B4, FM7, Halion, Pro-5, PPG Wave, Waldorf Attack and Waves, plus a Powercore card.

KONTAKT For Sound Design
“What I’ve really started getting into recently is Native Instruments KONTAKT — that definitely takes it to a whole new level,” says master sound designer, remixer and engineer for Poke In The Ear, Diffusion of Useful Noise, Useful Noise V.2 and Nine Inch Nails’s epic The Fragile, Keith Hillebrandt. “Between the EXS and KONTAKT, I pretty much have all the sampling power I think I’m going to need.”

REAKTOR
(instrument building modules)

Serious Reaktors
“Reaktor is a very powerful modular system — in many respects it is similar to the classic modular synthesizer systems,” says expert sound designer, composer and remixer Richard Devine.

“Like MAX/MSP you can build with objects that will link together. The sound quality of Reaktor is excellent, and the environment is very intuitive. I have been using their software since it first began as Generator. They really have evolved nicely and have created some of the most impressive sound applications out to date,” adds Devine.

“I also use Reaktor, which I think is fantastic for coming up with sequences and sounds you couldn’t do with anything else,” says engineer, mixer and producer Alan Moulder, who regular works with bands like NIN, My Bloody Valentine, The Smashing Pumpkins and Ash.
