The folks at FXpansion didn’t break onto the scene lightly. Rather, they did it with drum sticks in hand and armed with an arsensal of VST-adapters, quickly putting out all fires associated with apprehensions regarding VST incompatibility with certain Mac OS X apps — like Logic — or Pro Tools. FXpansion produces the highest quality of audio software apps and instruments, designed with the computer-based audiophile in mind.

BFD: A Fully Equipped Virtual Drum Room In A Box
BFD is a virtual drum module app that was masterminded and recorded by professional engineer Steve Duda (NIN, Pitchshifter, A Perfect Circle). For each type of drum type within a given kit, there are a number of different styles of hits to choose from. Each hit was sampled at up to 46 velocity layers, which makes the drums in this kit sound highly realistic.

Further, the drums were recorded with over $50,000 worth of Neumann, Sennheiser, AKG and other mics. The drums used in the making of BFD range from the 1920s to 2002, including both classics and rarities. BFD can be great for playing in your own percussive patterns, or you can alternately make use of the comprehensive library of ready-to-use MIDI Grooves that come with the app. These included grove span all sorts of different styles, feels and time signatures, played in by real drummers, including top UK session drummer Chris Dagley (Jamiroquai, Lalo Schifrin, Ella Fitzgerald, Eric Clapton, Chaka Khan).

Drag and drop the included grooves or import your own MIDI grooves into the BFD Groove Librarian. Then, you can trigger your beats in realtime from a keyboard or let the BFD freestyle it with the auto-shuffle and auto-fill features. BFD can also humanize, swing, tighten or relax the vibe as much as you want. Further, you can tweak or randomize the velocity and timing of your parts.

VST-to-Audio Units Adapter
For KVR-VST addicts and other sound junkies who might have feared for the loss of VST when the fall-out from the Apple-Emagic merger included a decision to cut VST out of future versions of Logic — your fears can now be gone! FXpansion’s VST-to-AU Adapter works phenomenally.

The VST-AU wrapper allows users of Audio Units-compatible apps like Emagic’s Logic Audio 6.x and MOTU’s Digital Performer 4.x to integrate VST plug-ins and instruments seamlessly. Once installed and configured, the wrapper will create “virtual Audio Units” for each of your VST plugins. As a result, your plugins will behave exactly the same as if they were true Audio Units.

Better yet, this wrapper app uses almost zero of your CPU power and quickly gives you complete compatibility with the huge selection of VST plug-ins out there. FXpansion has tested the adapter succesfully with plugins from Steinberg, Waves, TC-Works, Prosoniq, LinPlug, MDA, reFX, Ohm Force, Synapse Audio, DSound, PSP, Waldorf, INA-GRM, Elemental Audio, Arturia, AAS, Bitshift Audio, Bitheadz, DMI, GMedia, Green Oak, Rumpelrausch Taips, Spectrasonics, Swar Systems, Yellow Tools, Silverspike, Destroyfx, Antares, DigitalFishPhones, Rob Papen Virtual Instruments.

VST-to-RTAS Is Here!
Finally, the thing VST and Pro Tools lovers have been waiting for! FXpansion just unleashed its VST to RTAS adapter app, which lets studio kids use VST effects plug-ins and VST instruments seamlessly and transparently as RTAS plugins within a Pro Tools session. Better yet, the adapter doesn’t tax your CPU power or memory while it make the vast range of VST plug-ins available to you directly within Pro Tools.

It’s a no-complaints app, which is super easy to use and the cost is ridiculously low for the service it provides. The adapter supports all of the latest VST2 features, such as sample accurate timing, parameter automation, automatic tempo synchronization, easy preset browsing, and patch/preset interchange with other VST hosts such as Steinberg’s Cubase VST, Cubase SX and Nuendo series. No dongles required.

(special note: Adapter only works in Pro Tools and Pro Tools LE versions 6.0 and higher on Mac OS X and Windows XP. “Mac OS 9” VST plug-ins are not supported.)
